Programming at the Child Development Centre is sometimes delivered in a group setting. Groups offered are based on the needs of the children and families that are currently accessing our services. Some groups are designed for children, some for parents, and others may include both.
From January – March this year, a Target Word© group is taking place at Child Development Centre. This is a program for the parents of children who are late talkers. Carole Kroening, SLP, is offering the program at 2 times in order to meet the varying schedules of today’s busy families: Tuesday evenings or Wednesday noon hours. Parents come to 5 sessions, 2 hours long, with other parents where they learn strategies to create language learning opportunities for their children, and they learn how to select ‘Target Words’ specifically for their child. The parents also have 3 individual videotaping and feedback sessions with Carole and their child where they practice using the new strategies and suggestions are made to help adjust and fine tune the strategies to their child.
Another session of Jumping Jigglers will be starting up on Tuesday, February 7!!
Chatterbugs is a therapeutic language group designed to enhance communication skills for children experiencing language delays. The group also features parent participation, which extends the learning opportunities for each child at home. The current group is being run by Rosanne Bloom-Pereira, speech-language pathologist and Claudia Alge, early childhood therapy assistant (February 1 – March 28/12).
The group meets two mornings a week in the downstairs classroom and up to 8 children are in a group at one time. We have lots of fun as we help the children to improve their skills in the following areas: social language (using language to interact with peers and adults), sentence structure (grammar), understanding and expression of concepts (location, quantity), and/or questions (where, why, how), pre-reading skills, narrative development, and vocabulary.
