The Community Based Program operates in Whitehorse and consists of a team of therapists that work together with families, care givers, and community members to provide the best service possible. The team from the Child Development Centre includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, developmental therapists, early childhood therapy assistants, and a psychologist. Once the therapist and family have met, they will talk about what will best meet needs of the child and family. Children may see one therapist or a team of therapists. No matter who is involved, they will work with the family to determine the family’s priorities and needs of the child. After that, an Individual Program Plan or IPP will be developed that reflects what has been decided.
Children enrolled in the Community Based Program may receive services in their home, childcare setting, or here at the Centre. Services may include assessment, consultations, one-to-one therapy, parent support and training, working with childcare centres, or simply a few ideas to try at home. When it comes time to move into kindergarten, the team can work with the family and school to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
